What interests me as an architect is that the village above grew alongside this extraordinary effort, and the stone that the builders worked through — the Blisworth limestone that gives both the tunnel and the village their material character — went on to be quarried commercially from the 1850s onwards, loaded onto canal boats at the wharf and shipped across the Midlands. The village is literally built from the same geology that made the canal possible.

The solid stone cottages along the older lanes present the classic challenge: thick walls with no insulation, draughty window and door openings, and a building envelope that was designed for ventilation rather than thermal retention. Vapour-open insulation systems, carefully detailed airtightness at junctions, and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery can transform these homes — warmer, quieter, dramatically cheaper to run — while allowing the stone facades to continue breathing as they always have. The later housing in the village, from Victorian terraces to twentieth-century estates, offers more straightforward retrofit opportunities but the same principle applies: understand the fabric first, then improve its performance without damaging what makes it work.
