Most villages are defined by what you can see — the roofline, the church tower, the pattern of streets. Box is defined equally by what lies beneath. Miles of underground quarry workings run below the hillside, tunnels from which Bath stone was extracted for centuries — stone that built not just the village itself but the abbeys at Lacock and Stanley, Great Chalfield Manor and Longleat House. When Brunel completed his Great Western Railway tunnel through Box Hill in 1841, the excavation cracked open fresh seams of freestone that triggered decades of industrial-scale extraction, peaking between 1880 and 1909. The village above ground is the visible consequence of that underground industry: honey-coloured ashlar cottages, stone-mullioned windows, garden walls and gatepost caps all cut from the hillside they stand on. Our EnerPHit retrofit of The Old Orchard in Oxfordshire, featured in The Modern House Journal and The Spaces, demonstrated this inside-out approach on a building where the external envelope was part of the story. For a stone cottage within Box's conservation area, where every external alteration requires careful justification to Wiltshire Council, EnerPHit is often the most effective route to genuine improvement. Sustainable Design, for us, means choosing careful repair over replacement, working with breathable lime rather than cement, and ensuring that every intervention extends the life of what already exists.
Extension Design in a conservation village with this density of listed stone buildings is a creative challenge worth relishing. The material palette is unambiguous — Bath stone, limestone tile roofs, deep window reveals — and any addition must sit comfortably alongside masonry that has weathered for centuries. But responding to context does not mean reproducing the past. A thoughtfully detailed extension can be unmistakably of the present while speaking the same material language as the original building. When old and new are held in honest contrast, the result is often more satisfying than false continuity. For any new construction beyond the village, New Build Design must respond to the rural landscape that surrounds Box — the rolling farmland, the wooded hillsides above the underground workings. And in the open countryside, where development is tightly controlled, Paragraph 84 of the National Planning Policy Framework provides a route for homes of truly outstanding architectural quality in locations where standard planning policy would not normally permit building.
