Walk through Cheddington and you read the village's history in its walls. The Church of St Giles has stood here since the twelfth century, its chancel and nave the oldest surviving fabric, with a west tower and north aisle added in the late fifteenth century. A few hundred metres away, the Manor House — timber-framed, much gabled, its ground floor rebuilt at different times in red brick and vitreous brick with blue diaper patterns — records how a building can evolve across four centuries and still hold together as a coherent whole. Then there is the Rosebery Arms, designed by the Victorian architect George Devey for the Rothschild estate at neighbouring Mentmore, now converted into homes but still carrying that characteristic Devey quality of tiles and timbers that evoke earlier building traditions without copying them. What interests me about Cheddington is this continuity of craft — each generation building with the materials and methods available to it, and the village richer for the layering.

An Architect's Practice Shaped by Heritage and Sustainability
My membership of SPAB, the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, is something I draw on constantly in villages like Cheddington, where the building stock spans medieval rubblestone and Tudor timber frame through to Victorian estate architecture and twentieth-century infill. SPAB teaches a respect for existing fabric — understanding how a building works before proposing how it should change — and that principle runs through everything we do at Gresford Architects. EnerPHit is the Passivhaus Trust's retrofit standard, and it transforms how these homes perform through careful insulation, improved airtightness and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery. The result is a home that is warmer, quieter and dramatically cheaper to heat, without sacrificing the character that makes it worth keeping. I have lived in a home designed to Passivhaus standards myself, and the difference in comfort and energy use is something I can speak about from direct experience, not just theory.
