Chipping Warden takes its name from the Old English for market — and the market built the church. The Church of St Peter and St Paul, Grade I listed, is one of the finest medieval churches in the county, its six-bay nave arcades and clerestoried proportions funded by the prosperity of a settlement that rivalled Banbury as a trading centre during the reign of Edward III. Blocked Norman arches in the north chancel wall record a building from around 1200, but the overwhelming effect is of fourteenth-century confidence — Decorated Gothic on a scale that only commercial success could sustain.
