Collyweston gives its name to a roofing material that has covered buildings across the east Midlands since Roman times. Collyweston stone slate is not slate at all — it is a fissile Jurassic limestone, split by frost along its natural bedding planes into the thin, heavy slabs that define the roofscape of this part of England. Over 1,500 buildings in North Northamptonshire alone carry Collyweston roofs, and more than half of those are listed. What interests me as an architect is that a single village's geology shaped the visual identity of an entire region. The material is the architecture. The Church of St Andrew, Grade II* listed, dates from the eleventh century with additions through to the fifteenth, its own roof part of the tradition it helped establish. The village sits near Stamford on the Northamptonshire border.
