That is a staggering thought: people were building here four and a half thousand years ago, shaping the chalk and timber of Salisbury Plain into structures of purpose and meaning. The town we see today tells a different story of rapid construction, but the impulse is the same. When Larkhill camp was established in 1899 for artillery training on the Plain, the population of the parish doubled within a decade, and by 1921 it had tripled. The Church of All Saints is Grade II* listed, its nave dating to the twelfth century with a thirteenth-century chancel and a fifteenth-century west tower built in flint and limestone chequerwork — a construction technique characteristic of this part of Wiltshire, where knapped flint is set against pale limestone blocks in alternating squares. The twelfth-century south doorcase, reset during later works, retains a roll-moulded arch with leaf carvings that speak to the skill of the original masons. We approach every new build as an opportunity to prove that sustainable design produces better homes — more comfortable, more economical to run, and more joyful to live in. Paragraph 84 of the National Planning Policy Framework opens a separate route for exceptional homes in the open countryside beyond the town, where the chalk downland of Salisbury Plain and the proximity of the Stonehenge World Heritage Site set a landscape bar that only outstanding architecture can clear.
