Sustainable Design is embedded in every new build we undertake, shaping decisions about orientation, form and thermal performance from the very first sketch. We design homes that need minimal conventional heating, that stay cool in summer without air conditioning, and that treat sustainability as the starting point rather than an add-on. In a development of this ambition — where the hangars that once sheltered Concorde prototypes are being reimagined as a 17,000-capacity arena — the architecture of the homes around them needs to rise to the same level of aspiration.
Extension Design is where many projects begin for homeowners in the older parts of Filton. The housing stock in Filton Park is predominantly 1930s semi-detached — solidly built, privately owned, with generous plots that hint at what those homes could become. But the plans were drawn for a different family life: the kitchen is positioned at the back, separated from the living spaces, the garden is viewed from a distance rather than felt as an extension of the interior, and the side passage is too narrow for anything but storage. A well-designed extension can reorient the whole house — bringing the kitchen into the centre of family life, opening the garden, and treating the plot as the asset it is rather than a leftover. EnerPHit, the Passivhaus Institute's retrofit standard for existing buildings, brings discipline to what might otherwise feel overwhelming: a 1930s semi in Filton Park with solid brick walls, single-glazed windows and no loft insulation cannot be made comfortable with surface fixes. EnerPHit starts from first principles — it reads the building as a system, upgrades the thermal envelope, increases airtightness, and introduces mechanical ventilation with heat recovery so moisture and warmth are managed together rather than fighting one another. The payoff is tangible: a home that stays warm through winter, remains cool in summer, and carries a heating bill that might fall to a quarter of what it was before the work began. PassivHaus Design applies the same physics to new construction, and for any self-build or custom-build plot emerging from the Brabazon masterplan, it represents the gold standard: a home that needs almost no conventional heating from the day it is occupied.
Renovations in Filton carry their own particular interest. St Peter's Church is a case study in thoughtful adaptation — its medieval tower, probably dating from the late thirteenth century, was retained when the rest of the church was rebuilt by the architect John Hicks in 1844, and the building was enlarged again in 1960 to serve a growing congregation. Paragraph 84 of the National Planning Policy Framework opens a door that most sites cannot access: permission to build a genuinely exceptional home in open countryside, beyond the normal settlement boundary. The rural land to the north and east of Filton, where South Gloucestershire gives way to more open landscape, offers the kind of setting where Paragraph 84 can apply — but it demands genuine architectural quality, innovation and a sensitivity to place that goes well beyond standard compliance. It is one of the most challenging briefs in residential architecture, and it is the kind of project that brings out the best in what we do.
