The architect who went on to design Truro Cathedral — the last great cathedral built in England — came to Freeland in 1869 because one family, the Tauntons, believed this small settlement on the old road between Eynsham and Charlbury deserved something exceptional. St Mary the Virgin, with its Clayton and Bell stained glass and painted apsidal chancel, sits at the heart of a village that has always been more than its size suggests. What interests me about Freeland as an architect is that same tension between modesty and ambition: a place that grew from a handful of freehold cottages along a medieval route, yet invested in craftsmanship that would last centuries.
