King's Cliffe is a village that quarried its own architecture. The limestone beneath the parish has been extracted and worked since at least the fifteenth century, when King's Cliffe stone was being shipped as far as Cambridge for use in the colleges. For two hundred years the quarries supplied building stone across the region, until the finer-textured limestone from Ketton gradually displaced it in the early seventeenth century — though King's Cliffe stone continued in local use for much longer, and its presence in the village is unmistakable. Walk through the streets today and you see it everywhere: squared coursed limestone with ashlar dressings, topped with the distinctive grey-blue Collyweston slate that defines this corner of Northamptonshire. It is a village that looks as though it grew out of the ground beneath it, which in a very literal sense it did. As an architect, I find that relationship between geology and settlement — where the material under your feet becomes the walls around you — one of the most compelling things about working in stone villages.

Working With King's Cliffe's Stone Tradition
Renovations in King's Cliffe demand an architect who understands stone — not just its appearance but its behaviour. The Church of All Saints, Grade I listed, has a tower dating from the first half of the twelfth century with what may be Saxon-origin windows, a broach spire added in the thirteenth century, and a nave largely rebuilt in the fifteenth. It is constructed from regular coursed limestone with ashlar dressings and Collyweston slate roofs, and it sets the material standard for the village. The houses and cottages around it follow the same tradition — squared coursed limestone, ashlar quoins, stone-slate roofs — a vocabulary that has been consistent here for centuries. Solid stone walls of this kind manage moisture through their mass and their permeable lime mortar. Seal them with cement or impermeable coatings and that balance breaks down. In King's Cliffe, where the housing stock is predominantly stone-built, the challenge is achieving modern levels of comfort and efficiency while respecting the breathability of the existing fabric. Internal vapour-open insulation, carefully detailed airtightness at junctions where walls meet floors and roofs, and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery can transform how these homes feel to live in — warmer, quieter, dramatically cheaper to run — while the limestone facades continue to weather and breathe as they have for generations. Where later housing exists in the village, with cavity walls or rendered construction, the retrofit approach is different but the principle is the same: understand the fabric, then improve its performance.
Extension Design in King's Cliffe means working within one of the most visually coherent stone villages in the county. An extension that introduces alien materials or ignores the proportions of the existing building will read as an intrusion. The best extensions here respond to the limestone palette — the coursed walling, the ashlar dressings, the Collyweston slate — while bringing something of their own time.
