An Architectural Practice Built on Sustainable Principles

I founded Gresford Architects in 2006 in London, and we are now based in Oxford, working with clients across the country. How We Work With Homes in Kingswood and Fishponds

Extension Design is where many projects in Kingswood and Fishponds begin, because the area's geological and industrial past created an unusually varied housing stock — the Victorian terraces built during the quarrying boom sitting alongside inter-war semis and older pennant stone cottages, each with different materials, different structural logic, and different relationships to the conservation framework. Within the Kingswood Conservation Area, South Gloucestershire applies specific policies — materials, scale, and the relationship between new work and existing character all matter. An extension to a pennant stone cottage requires a different material sensibility than one to a 1930s semi, and getting that judgement right is what distinguishes an extension that belongs from one that jars.

The Victorian terraces in Fishponds present one of the clearest cases for EnerPHit retrofit anywhere in this part of the country. These are homes from the era when the quarries were exhausting and the population was swelling — solid pennant stone rubble walls or early brick, single-glazed sash windows, uninsulated roofs, and suspended timber floors that let draughts rise from below. They were not designed to be thermally efficient — they were designed to house a growing industrial workforce quickly and affordably. The Passivhaus Institute's EnerPHit standard offers a rigorous, whole-building approach: continuous insulation, airtightness, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, and high-performance glazing working together as a system. The result is a home that is warmer, quieter, and dramatically cheaper to heat — while keeping the proportions and street presence that give Fishponds its character. Where older pennant stone buildings are involved, the approach must be adapted to allow the masonry to breathe, using lime-based insulation systems rather than vapour-closed solutions that could trap moisture within the stone.

The Kingswood Masterplan, adopted by South Gloucestershire Council, sets out a framework for the regeneration of the town centre over the next fifteen to twenty years, including the redevelopment of the Kings Chase Shopping Centre site and improvements to the High Street and Regent Street. New Build Design in this context carries a particular responsibility — new homes and mixed-use buildings need to respond to the existing grain of Kingswood, to its pennant stone walls and its Victorian commercial frontages, without resorting to pastiche. Renovations in the Kingswood Conservation Area require an architect who understands both the planning framework and the building fabric. The Grade I listed Whitfield Tabernacle on Park Road, dating from 1741 and built where George Whitefield had preached to the coal miners of Kingswood, is currently undergoing a major restoration — a reminder of how significant the heritage here is.
