Littleton Panell sits on the Gault and greensand strip where the chalk downland meets the clay vale, and the local stone tells you so: walk past All Saints Church in neighbouring West Lavington and you see greensand rubble in the nave walls, a dark, iron-rich stone quite unlike anything quarried ten miles north or south. It is a material that weathers unevenly, that holds moss and lichen in its texture, that gives buildings here a rougher, more geological quality than the sawn ashlar of the Bath stone belt. For an architect, that kind of specificity is a gift.
