What fascinates me about Richings Park is that an architect once invented a building material specifically for this place. When the Sykes brothers bought the estate in 1922 and commissioned George E. Clare to design their garden village, Clare did not simply draw houses and hand the plans to a builder. He developed and patented his own kiln-fired building blocks — each one the size of six bricks, with interlocking keys top and bottom and channels that created a cavity wall of sorts — and built Richings Park from them. It is a detail that says something important about what architecture can be when someone cares enough to think the problem through from first principles.
