There is a building in Ruspidge that tells you almost everything about the village in a single glance. The former pump house at Lightmoor Colliery — Grade II listed, built around 1840 from coursed rubblestone with tooled quoin blocks — stands three storeys tall beside what is now a sawmill. It housed a beam engine powerful enough to keep water out of the mine workings below. The colliery has gone, the engine has gone, but the stone shell remains, repurposed and still useful. That cycle of building, abandoning, and finding new purpose runs through the whole history of Ruspidge. It is one of the most interesting things about working in places where industry has shaped everything — the buildings that survive were built to last, and the question is always what they can become next.

Sustainable Architecture Rooted in Practice

Architecture for a Village Built on Industry

Ruspidge grew up around the mines. Buckshaft ironstone mine opened in 1835 just to the north, Lightmoor Colliery was sunk around the same time, and the Eastern United Colliery extracted coal nearby. The housing followed the work — terraced stone cottages along Buckshaft Road, modest in scale, built from the same dark stone quarried locally. St John the Evangelist, designed by Edward Blore in 1843 in the Early English style, gave the growing settlement a parish church serving Ruspidge, Soudley, and the southern end of Cinderford. What you see today is a village that has outlived the industry that created it: solid nineteenth-century stone alongside mid-twentieth-century council housing and later infill that has gradually drawn Ruspidge into Cinderford's orbit.

Sustainable Design in Ruspidge means working with this layered building stock honestly. The older stone terraces have thermal mass but often poor insulation, single-skin construction, and limited ventilation. Improving their performance — reducing energy use, managing moisture, making them genuinely comfortable — is what our approach to sustainability is about. Not a constraint, but the opportunity to make a good building work properly for the people living in it today. For sites in the open countryside around the Statutory Forest boundary, Paragraph 84 of the National Planning Policy Framework offers a route for genuinely exceptional homes that justify their setting through design quality.

Renovations in Ruspidge need to respect the way these older buildings were put together. Pennant sandstone walls were traditionally pointed with lime mortar and left exposed, managing moisture by breathing rather than trapping it. Cement pointing and impermeable coatings can do real damage to these structures. EnerPHit, the Passivhaus Institute's certified retrofit standard, offers a disciplined alternative: improving airtightness, adding insulation where it works, introducing mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, all while respecting the building's original moisture strategy. For the stone terraces in Ruspidge, this is the difference between a renovation that performs and one that stores up problems.

Extension Design for homes in Ruspidge needs to respond to the character of the street. The terraces along Buckshaft Road sit close together on tight plots with narrow frontages and small rear gardens, so any addition must be carefully scaled, respecting the existing grain rather than pushing beyond it. Forest of Dean District Council handles planning, and they expect new work to sit comfortably within the streetscape. New Build Design on sites within or adjacent to Ruspidge calls for the same sensitivity — understanding the scale, the materials, and the way buildings here address their streets. PassivHaus Design brings a rigorous framework: superinsulated, airtight, with mechanical ventilation and heat recovery. In the Forest of Dean, where winters are damp and heating costs matter, the case for building to that standard is as practical as it is environmental.
