Most villages hold on to their churches. Sutton Veny let one go. The ruins of St Leonard's still stand at the edge of the village — a twelfth-century Norman doorway with waterleaf capitals, thirteenth-century crossing arches, the chancel intact but the nave open to the sky since the 1860s. Rather than pour resources into a building that had outgrown its congregation, the village built St John the Evangelist to replace it, and St Leonard's passed quietly into the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. There is something honest about that decision, something an architect can respect: the recognition that a building's purpose matters more than its preservation for its own sake, and that sometimes the most thoughtful response is to build afresh rather than force an old structure to do work it was never designed for.
