There is something telling about a town whose High Street is shaped like a boat. Walk Thame's broad central thoroughfare from end to end and you are tracing a piece of deliberate medieval planning — a wide, curving space laid out in the twelfth century by the Bishop of Lincoln specifically to accommodate a market. That market has run continuously since 1183, and the town received its Royal Charter in 1215. But what strikes me most about Thame is what has happened to the buildings that line that space over the centuries since. Many of the structures along the High Street began as timber-framed houses in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, only to be refronted with Georgian brick facades a hundred years later. Strip back the surface and the old frames are still there — oak posts and beams carrying the weight of a building that has been quietly reinvented without losing its bones.
That kind of layering is endlessly interesting to me as an architect. It tells you that people in Thame have always understood something important about buildings: that they are not fixed objects but things that evolve, that can be improved and adapted without being erased. It is exactly the principle that drives our work at Gresford Architects, whether we are working with a listed property in the conservation area or designing something entirely new on the edge of this growing town.
Trust Built on Heritage and Performance
I founded Gresford Architects in London in 2006, and we are now based at the Oxford Eco Centre in Osney Mead — a deliberately small practice where I lead every project personally. I am a RIBA Chartered and ARB Registered architect, and my membership of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings reflects a deep commitment to understanding historic structures on their own terms, not imposing modern assumptions on old fabric. Architecture That Reads the Layers
Thame's conservation area is home to over 180 listed buildings, and working here means understanding how those layers of history sit together. The Grade I listed Church of St Mary the Virgin anchors the southern end of the High Street with its thirteenth-century nave arcades and Perpendicular Gothic tower. The fifteenth-century Birdcage Inn is among the timber-framed survivors that give the town its texture, and the Spread Eagle — with its early eighteenth-century brick facade — is another reminder of how Thame's buildings have been reinvented across the centuries. And then there are the Georgian refrontings — elegant brick facades that transformed the streetscape in the eighteenth century while preserving the older structures behind them. Each building tells a different story about how Thame has adapted over time, and each one demands a different architectural response.
Renovations in this context require patience, knowledge, and genuine respect for what already exists. A timber-framed building behaves differently from a Georgian brick house — moisture moves through the fabric in different ways, structural loads are distributed differently, and the original builders had different intentions. Our SPAB training means we approach each building by asking how it was designed to work, not just what we want it to become. That understanding shapes everything from specification of breathable lime mortars and insulation to the positioning of new openings and the treatment of historic joinery.
Extension Design in Thame often involves navigating the relationship between a historic frontage and a rear that has already been altered more than once. Proposals within the conservation area are rightly scrutinised, and that scrutiny is something we welcome.
