As an architect, I find that story compelling — a place that has already absorbed radical change and is now, with significant new housing planned off Byfield Road, on the cusp of another transformation. The housing stock in Woodford Halse is unusually varied for a village of its size — older ironstone properties in the conservation area along the High Street, Pool Street and Parsons Street, the terraced rows built for railway workers in the early 1900s, and mid-to-late twentieth-century homes that filled in around them. Many of those railway-era terraces in Woodford Halse are solid-walled, uninsulated, and expensive to heat — built quickly for a workforce that needed housing fast, not for long-term thermal performance. Vapour-permeable internal insulation, triple-glazed windows and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery can turn a draughty terrace into a home that is comfortable year-round, economical to run and designed to last. For the older ironstone cottages within the Woodford Halse and Hinton Conservation Area, the same principles apply but with closer attention to the breathability of traditional solid walls — lime mortars, natural stone, and construction methods that have worked for centuries deserve interventions that respect that logic. With proposals for some 250–300 homes on land off Byfield Road, and further development sites under consideration, Woodford Halse is one of the settlements facing the most significant housing growth under West Northamptonshire Council's emerging local plan. The Woodford cum Membris Neighbourhood Plan, made in 2018, gives the community a voice in how growth is managed, and any new home should respond to that framework — not just in density and layout, but in the quality of its architecture. We approach every new build with a fabric-first philosophy: insulation, airtightness and ventilation designed as an integrated system, creating homes that are comfortable, economical and kinder to the planet. PassivHaus Design takes that approach to its most exacting standard, virtually eliminating the need for conventional heating — a standard we have delivered and lived in ourselves.
