The name Yardley comes from the Old English gyrda and leah — the clearing in the forest where poles and spars were cut for building. Before the village was a place to live, it was a place to gather materials. That origin feels significant for anyone thinking architecturally about this settlement, because the relationship between Yardley Gobion and its landscape has always been practical. The village stood within the bounds of Whittlewood Forest, one of eighteen settlements subject to Henry I's forest law. The Gobion family, granted land here around 1160, held the estate for over two centuries. When the Grand Junction Canal — now the Grand Union — was cut through the parish in the late eighteenth century, it brought another layer of infrastructure to a village that had always been shaped by the resources around it. The Old Wharf Farmhouse, Grade II listed, records that canal connection in stone and brick.

My training with SPAB — the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings — taught me to understand a building before changing it: how the walls manage moisture, how the structure carries load, how the materials weather. That discipline governs every project our practice takes on, from the most sensitive listed building repair to new construction designed for the lowest possible energy demand. The medieval chantry chapel dedicated to St Leonard, near the High Street, was closed during Edward VI's reign and converted first to a public house and then a private dwelling — a history of adaptation that captures how the village has always repurposed what it inherits. The Manor Farmhouse, Grade II listed, dates from the early to mid-eighteenth century in coursed squared limestone with a plain-tile hipped roof. The Yardley Chapel of 1825, also Grade II listed, is built from coursed limestone rubble with a slate roof. The limestone properties in Yardley Gobion present the familiar challenge of solid-walled construction: thick walls with no insulation, draughty junctions, and a building envelope designed for ventilation rather than thermal retention. Vapour-open insulation, careful airtightness detailing, and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery can transform them — warmer, quieter, dramatically cheaper to run — while the limestone facades continue to weather as they always have. The later brick buildings respond differently to insulation and moisture, and the retrofit strategy must reflect that difference.
Extension Design in the conservation area should respond to the materials and proportions that give the village its character. The limestone of the older properties, the brick of the canal-era buildings, the modest scale of the cottages along the High Street — all contribute to a streetscape that an extension should complement rather than disrupt. Whether the brief is a ground-floor extension that connects the house to the garden, a garden room, or additional space above, the design should make the whole building feel more resolved while sitting comfortably within the village fabric.
