Carterton is a town that has been built quickly, and it shows. Founded just after 1900 as a colony of smallholders on what was then open farmland in the parish of Black Bourton, it grew in fits and starts — first the modest plots and makeshift houses of William Carter's original settlers, then the military housing that arrived with RAF Brize Norton in the late 1930s, and later the successive waves of post-war expansion that turned a small settlement into one of the largest towns in Oxfordshire. Each phase brought its own building stock, its own materials, its own assumptions about how long things needed to last. Very little of it was designed with the kind of care that a place this size deserves.

That is not a criticism — it is an observation about opportunity. Towns that have grown rapidly around a single driver, whether military or industrial, often reach a point where the next chapter of building can be different. Carterton is at that point now. I founded Gresford Architects in London in 2006, and we are now based in Oxford, just twelve miles east. We have spent almost twenty years building a practice around one conviction: that sustainable design is not an aesthetic choice or a marketing line, but the only sensible way to build.
