Gretton sits on the edge of a plateau overlooking the Welland Valley and the border with Rutland, and the iron that runs through its ground has shaped it from the very beginning. Iron Age currency bars have been found in the parish. The Romans worked the ironstone deposits here. There were ironworks in Edward the Confessor's reign, a thousand years ago, when Gretton was a royal manor. And then, from the 1880s until 1980, the quarries opened up again on an industrial scale, feeding ore to the steelworks at Corby a few miles to the south-west. What fascinates me as an architect is that the same iron-rich stone that was extracted by the ton for smelting also built the village itself — the banded ironstone and limestone houses that line the streets, their warm ochre and rust tones giving Gretton a colour palette quite unlike the paler limestone villages to the south. This is a village where the geology is not just beneath your feet but in the walls around you.

Sustainability and Conservation in One Practice

Our work begins with the conviction that a building's environmental performance and its architectural character are not competing priorities. The later housing — from the period when quarrying brought workers to the village and the population grew — offers more straightforward retrofit opportunities, but the principle is the same: understand the fabric first, then improve its performance.
