When the floor of St Peter's was lifted in 1986, the builders found Saxon mortar still bonded to flint rubble footings beneath the nave — evidence that a stone church had stood on this ground since at least the late eleventh century. The lower walls of the present nave are that same Saxon structure, absorbed into a building that grew around it: Norman arches cut through the north wall in the twelfth century, Early English bays added to the south in the thirteenth, an embattled tower raised to the west, and George Gilbert Scott's careful restoration drawing it all together in 1848. What interests me about Iver is how each generation built with what was already there rather than starting again.
