Within the parish boundary of Ringstead lies Mallows Cotton, a medieval village that was thriving in 1274 and is now a Scheduled Monument — earthworks in a field, visible only from the air or on foot. The village vanished; Ringstead survived. That distinction is worth thinking about, because it was not inevitable. Both settlements stood on the same stretch of the Nene valley, both were built from the same ironstone, both served the same agricultural landscape. But Ringstead endured, and the evidence of why is still here: its Grade I listed church, built from local ironstone in the first half of the thirteenth century, remains the oldest and most significant building in the village. The name itself may derive from the Old English hring, a circular place — perhaps referring to the shape of the ancient fields. What interests me as an architect is the survival. Settlements fail for many reasons, but the ones that last are usually the ones where the buildings were good enough to keep repairing.

My training with SPAB — the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings — taught me that the first principle of working with historic buildings is understanding how they already work. Before deciding what to change, you must understand the materials, the structure, the way the building manages moisture and load. That discipline runs through every project our practice takes on.
